LINDEN, TN- The Perry County Vikings (0-2) took on the Houston County Fighting Irish (2-0) in their home opener this past Friday and it was an absolute dog fight from the beginning. However, the Vikings could not get into the end zone as they fell 13-0 on a very emotional night in Linden.

Just a little over a month ago, the Vikings Football team and the community lost a son, brother, and friend as Paige Peeler lost his life after an auto mobile accident in July. At the start of the game, Viking's Lucas Childress and Walker Wright walked onto the field with each holding a sleeve of the number 64 jersey that Paige would have worn this season.

The Vikings will honor him all year as they will wear a white decal with the black number 64 on their helmets. Peeler would have been a Junior at PCHS and was looking forward to anchoring the Vikings defensive line this season. Paige would have been proud of his teammates for the way they showed heart and discipline on the defensive front against a stingy Fighting Irish team.

The Vikings were able to swarm to the Fighting Irish rushing attack and were able to come up with two big takeaways during the game as Bryson Fuqua and Lucas Childress recovered fumbles. The Viking offense was led by Gage Deavers who had 10 carries for 34 yards. The Boys in Black couldn't get anything going offensively all night as penalties were a big problem in this contest.

Perry County's defense did all they could as Houston County had 46 total plays for only 159 yards of total offense. However, the Vikings offense had 36 total plays and 94 total yards.

The Vikings will be back in action on Friday, August 31st as they host the McEwen Warriors (1-1) for the first Region 6-1A matchup of the 2018 season. Come out to Viking Stadium to cheer on your Vikings as kickoff is set for 7 p.m. It's Good To Be Gold! Go Vikings!
