LYNNVILLE, TN- The Vikings (0-1) were coming off a (1-9) 2017 campaign last season that saw the black and gold lose some good talent on offense (Jeff Martin) and defense (Cannon Daniel) due to graduation. Coach Billy Sawyer is in his sixth season as head coach of Perry County Football and throughout the first half this team had a lot of bright spots. Ultimately, the Vikings fell short of their first win, falling 29-8 to the Richland Raiders.

Both teams had a problem with the turnover bug early. The Vikings threw a pick, the Raiders fumbled, then the Vikings would fumble. But as the night went on, it was who was going to make the least amount of mistakes. Unfortunately for the Black and Gold, they had five turnovers to just three for Richland.

The Raiders (1-0) scored in the second quarter from 18 yards out after a Viking fumble on special teams that made the score 7-0. On the ensuing possession the Vikings couldn’t get anything going but the Raiders got the ball and scored once more to go to the half up 14-0.

`In the second half, the Vikings, led by Junior Running Back, Gage Deavers (20 carries/ 145 yards), were able to find some holes in the Raiders defense. However, the Vikings turned the ball over once more and the Raiders took advantage of it. After coming up short again the Vikings ensuing punt was run back 65 yards as the Raiders led 29-0 in the third.

In the Fourth, the Vikings, Deavers, and Walker Wright wouldn’t leave Lynnville without a score and that’s what they did as Wright faked left and went right to out run the defense for the score and Clay Sensing got the two-point conversion for the final score 29-8.

The Vikings host the Houston County Fighting Irish (1-0) Friday Night at Viking Stadium for the 2018 home opener. It’s going to be a Black Out so wear your Black and of course your Gold and let’s pack the house! Don’t forget the Fifth Quarter will be held in the High School Cafeteria following every home game for great food and games! It’s Good To Be Gold! Go Vikings!
