The Loretto Mustangs Are Heading To The Class A Championship

MURFREESBORO, TN- The Loretto Mustangs (27-5) are one win away from their first State Basketball Championship in program history after they defeated the Monterey Wildcats (31-6) in the Semi-Finals 69-63 on Friday afternoon.

Loretto, not known for their Boys Basketball, is more known for their Baseball (2017 State Champs), Girls Basketball (1958 State Champs), and Football.

The only State Championship in basketball came 60 years ago when the Lady Mustangs beat Nashville Litton when there was no classification.

The Mustangs came out of the gate on fire as they led 18-15 after one but shot 50% from the field.. In the second, it was more of a defensive quarter. The Wildcats of Monterey were able to hold the Mustangs  to 36% shooting.

However, the Mustangs were able to take the lead to half as the scoreboard said; Mustangs- 30  Wildcats- 25.

In the second half, the Wildcats and Mustangs were lights out. Neither team could stop one another  as the Wildcats shot 46% from the field and the Mustangs shot 42% as the Mustangs led 47-41 after the third.

Going to the fourth and final quarter it was all Loretto as they got up by as much as twelve points but Monterey got to within five but that was as close as they could get. The Mustangs were victorious 69-63 for their first ever Basketball State Basketball appearance.

The Mustangs take on the #1 ranked Memphis Douglass Red Devils (32-1) at 3:30 p.m. for the Class A State Championship.
