MURFREESBORO, TN- Since they were in the fourth grade, seniors Will McBee, Ryan Weathers, Kirkland Surratt, and Jacob Hallmark have dreamed of winning a State Basketball Championship.

That day finally came for the Mustangs (29-5) of Loretto as they defeated the #1 ranked Memphis Douglass Red Devils (32-2) 74-67 in the TSSAA Class A Blue Cross Basketball State Championship Saturday at Murphy Center's Monte Hale Arena on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

"Usually we were getting the crap beat out of us by older teams that were in fifth, sixth grade." McBee said, "But we matured, became closer, and now we're the ones with the gold ball.

This senior class of Loretto boys basketball players will no doubt go down, arguably, as the best class to ever play boys basketball at Loretto.

In their four years wearing the black and gold, the 2017-18 class compiled an overall record of (97-30) and a District 12A record of (33-7). They won 3 District Championships, 4 Region Championships, had 4 Sub-State Appearances, 3 State Tournament appearances, 1 Final Four appearance, and 1 State Championship.

Now that is a great way to end your high school career.

Some may say that the Mustangs may never get this far again since they lose so much talent. Well, not so fast my friend. The middle school in Loretto, South Lawrence Middle, won their Sectional game this season and have a bunch of talent coming up including Coach Greg Tipps son, Brendon next season.

"We expected to be here, that's the way this program's going to be." Coach Tipps said, "These guys started it, that's the way I am. We got really good players coming up and these guys are the cause of it."

This is looking to be the start of a dynasty that could last a long time down in southern Lawrence County.
