End Of An Era: Wooden McGee Bridge To Be Removed

PERRY COUNTY, TN - One of the last remaining wooden bridges in Perry County will be torn down starting next week.

For decades, the Oville McGee bridge has stood over the peaceful Short Creek on McGee Road. Don't be fooled by the boards, this bridge has stood the weight of daily school buses, dump trucks, and neighborhood trucks for years.

But like most things in life, it has to change at some point.

The Perry County Highway Department says work to replace the bridge with a modern concrete structure begins Friday, and will last at least 3 months. Residents will, for now, use the end of McGee Road that connects to Old Hohenwald Road. For most, it is a much welcome safety improvement. To others, it's goodbye to an old friend that rattled the tires and greeted you home each day.
