Wayne County Armed Citizen Aids Law Enforcement In Capture Of Fugitive

WAYNESBORO, TN-A Leoma man lead officers from different counties through two states on a wild chase, that ended with an armed citizen making the capture possible.
On Thursday, February 1st, Wayne County deputies went to a home in the south part of Wayne County to serve a warrant for failure to appear on Derrick Kelly, 39, Leoma. The officers went to Kelley's brother home.

Court documents say that Kelly was sitting in a parked truck in the home's driveway. When he saw the offices he allegedly fled and triggered what would be multi-jurisdiction pursuit.

Kelly reportedly traveled several different roads in southern Wayne County and crossed the state line into Alabama then back into Tennessee during the chase.  The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Park Rangers and Collinwood Police joined the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in the pursuit that eventually lead to Kelly's capture.

After running several people off the roads, Kelly made a U-turn on Chisolm Road. The sheriff's office was able to box Kelly's vehicle in but he allegedly rammed the patrol vehicle twice trying to escape. The pursuit continued onto Cedar Grove Road and the Sheriff  Ric Wilson made the decision to call the pursuit off due to safety concerns.

Sometime after the search was terminated Kelly abandoned the truck he was driving and was spotted by Chief Deputy Donnie Carroll driving a Pontiac Grand Prix. The Pontiac was registered to also registered to Kelly.

Carrol attempted to stop Kelly on Pumping Station Road, near Gilchrist Auto Salvage. Kelly once again allegedly fled. During that pursuit, Kelly crashed his Pontiac into a tree near McGlamery Church. Kelly then reportedly fled on foot and tried to get into at least two nearby homes.

Kelly was captured by law enforcement when a citizen saw him hiding and fired shots from a weapon.

Kelly was charged with multiple charges including reckless endangerment and felony evading arrest.

Kelly's original charge of Failure to Appear stemmed from a DUI case.
